Weekly Address: Protecting the American People with New Wall Street Reforms

In this week’s address, President Obama highlights the work of the new independent consumer watchdog he fought to create. This agency’s mission is to stand up for consumers and includes protecting every American from mistakes made by the companies who determine their credit scores

Watch President Obama's weekly address.

President Obama delivers the Weekly Address

In Case You Missed It

Here’s a quick glimpse at what happened this week on WhiteHouse.gov:

Hurricane Sandy: The Hurricane is currently moving away from the Bahamas and toward the East Coast of the United States. Forecasters with the National Weather Center are tracking the path of the storm, while FEMA offices from Atlanta to Boston are readying for a potential impact. The President spoke on the phone with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, Dr. Rick Knabb, Director of the Hurricane Center, John Brennan, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism about the ongoing preparations.

FEMA is currently advising residents in the path of Sandy (which includes those on much of the East Coast) to prepare for tropical storm and hurricane conditions. Read these set of basic safety tips, and visit www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement: U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Panamanian Minister of Commerce and Industry Ricardo Quijano signed a letter of exchange setting a date for the entry-into-force of the U.S.-Panama Trade Promotion Agreement. Starting October 31, Panama will eliminate tariffs on more than 86 percent of U.S. industrial and consumer goods. Learn more about the trade promotion agreement, and see what key stakeholders are saying this will mean for the United States’ economy.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: On Wednesday afternoon, Dr. Jill Biden and Secretary Kathleen Sebelius hosted three breast cancer survivors at the Naval Observatory for a Breast Cancer Awareness Month conference call. They reminded advocates around the country about the importance of early detection and prevention. Read more about the call, and learn about the survivors here.

On Wednesday evening, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden hosted a reception at the Naval Observatory commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month for survivors, advocates, and women’s health groups. Vice President Biden said that he and Dr. Biden have long been committed to the cause of raising awareness for breast cancer, and he thanked the survivors attending the event for their courage—giving other women with breast cancer hope.

United Nations Day: Wednesday marked the 67th anniversary of the United Nations. In a Presidential Proclamation, President Obama reflected on the progress the international community has made since the creation of the United Nations:

Through the better part of a century, we have seen what is possible when a strong and united international community takes action to advance the interests and values we share. The founding values of the United Nations remind us that countries can resolve their differences peacefully, and that all people deserve the chance to seek their own destiny, free from fear and empowered with their most fundamental rights. As we recognize this 67th anniversary of the United Nations, let us recommit to carrying that vision forward in the years ahead.

Read the full proclamation here.

White House Hosts Visiting Young African Leaders: Earlier this week, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs Grant Harris met with a group of twenty-seven young African leaders at the White House, continuing the Administration’s engagement with Africa’s next generation of leaders. Senior Director Harris led a discussion on the U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa, and the goals of the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative. Learn more about the visit, and the U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa here.

National Christmas Tree: We know it’s still October, but the nation’s capital is already getting ready for the holidays. This week, the lottery for tickets to see the lighting of the National Christmas Tree is officially open. To sign up for your chance, visit Recreation.gov.

Reed's Recipes Help You Make Half Your Grains Whole
10/24/2012 01:04 PM EDT

Posted by:
Kate Strangfeld

One of the easiest ways to eat healthy is to make at least half of your grains whole. You can transform your family's favorite recipes -- like Belgian waffles and French toast -- into healthy ones rich in whole grains. iCarly's Reed Alexander shows us how it's done. Check out Reed's healthy kid favorites for you to try at home:

BELGIAN WAFFLES

Belgian Waffles

Directions:
  1. Preheat waffle iron to medium heat (follow manufacturer instructions).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients – the whole-wheat flour, raw sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate, medium bowl, combine the wet ingredients – the nonfat milk, applesauce, egg whites, and vanilla extract.
  4. Add the wet ingredients into the larger bowl containing the dry ingredients. Mix thoroughly until there are no lumps in the batter.
  5. When waffle iron is heated, thoroughly coat the interior top and bottom surfaces with canola oil spray OR nonstick cooking spray. Working in batches if necessary, pour the appropriate amount of batter into the wells of the waffle iron, close lid, and bake until golden brown, crispy, and cooked through (follow manufacturer instructions).
  6. Remove waffles when finished and place on a heatproof plate or serving dish.
  7. Drizzle with a little maple syrup and additional toppings (like berries or diced fruit), if desired.
  8. Serve and enjoy!
Yield: 8 to 10 medium square waffles.

TURKEY MEATBALLS

Turkey Meatballs

Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to broiler setting. Lightly spray a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil with extra virgin olive oil. Set aside.
  2. Add all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and mix with hands or a large wooden spoon until completely combined. (KewlTip: Don’t over-mix the turkey meat! This could break down the meat too much. Once all ingredients are just evenly mixed, you’re good to go!)
  3. Using hands, roll all the meat into 12 individual balls of the same size. Place them on the baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and sprayed with extra virgin olive oil in Step 1 (see above). Space them evenly apart.
  4. Place the baking sheet with the Turkey Meatballs into the oven and broil for approximately 8-10 minutes or until the tops of the meatballs are golden-brown. (KewlTip: Broil the Turkey Meatballs while the Tomato Sauce [see recipe for Tomato Sauce for Turkey Meatballs] is simmering on the stove-top!)
  5. Take the baking sheet with the Turkey Meatballs out of the oven. Remove the Turkey Meatballs, set them aside, and discard the aluminum foil lining.
  6. Place the Turkey Meatballs in the Tomato Sauce and allow the meatballs and sauce to simmer together over medium heat on the stove-top for approximately 15 minutes or until the meatballs are completely cooked through.
  7. When the Turkey Meatballs are done cooking, remove from pan and serve with Tomato Sauce immediately. Enjoy!
Makes 12 Turkey Meatballs.

KEWL FRENCH TOAST

French Toast

Directions:
  1. Coat a pan with canola oil spray. Set over medium heat on the stovetop.
  2. In a bowl, mix together egg whites, nonfat skim milk, orange zest, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon and ground allspice.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg white mixture on both sides.
  4. Place slices of bread into pan and cook them for 2-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  5. Serve with orange slices and 2 tsp of maple syrup per serving.
Yields 2 servings.

KEWL KRUNCH BARS

Kewl Krunch Bars

Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat a 9×13-inch baking sheet with canola oil spray.
  2. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix all dry ingredients -- the instant quick oats, whole-wheat flour, raw sugar, wheat germ, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  3. In a smaller bowl, thoroughly mix all wet ingredients -- the honey, unsweetened applesauce, canola oil, and egg whites.
  4. Pour the mixture of the wet ingredients formed in Step 3 into the larger bowl containing the mixture of the dry ingredients created in Step 2. Stir to thoroughly mix the two, until a rich, thick batter has formed.
  5. Stir into the batter the roughly chopped dried fruits (the dried cherries and dried apricots) and the roughly chopped nuts (the almonds and walnuts), until they are completely distributed.
  6. Press the batter into the baking sheet, spreading it out until it occupies the full capacity of the baking sheet in a smooth and even layer.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until the batter is cooked through.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the batter to cool completely in the baking sheet before cutting into approximately 20 rectangular bars. To do so, make a single cut down the center of the batter by slicing in a direction parallel to the longer 13-inch sides of the baking sheet.
  9. Next, make ten cuts slicing from one 13-inch side of the baking sheet to the other, parallel to the shorter 9-inch sides of the baking sheet, with the first being made approximately 1 1/3 inches from one side of the baking sheet. Continue to make each of the remaining nine cuts at a distance of 1 1/3 inches from the previous cut, until approximately 20 Kewl Krunch Bars have been formed.
  10. Carefully lift the Kewl Krunch Bars from the baking sheet. Enjoy this satisfying and nutritious treat!
Makes approximately 20 Kewl Krunch Bars.

The Gardeners' Share Grows in McLean

Editor's note: This is post was orginally published on U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In McLean, a community tucked inside Fairfax County, not everyone can access the food they need for good health. I interviewed Julie Mendoza about her efforts to connect hungry families in McLean with fresh produce.

Julie knew that Share McLean, a food pantry that serves hungry families in the area, often lacked fresh produce. As she was walking through the McLean community garden one day, she noticed that there was an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. She decided she would try to facilitate a relationship between the garden and Share McLean, calling it The Gardeners’ Share of McLean.

“I wrote a letter… and got permission to not only use the additional supply of produce but to also begin planting fruits and vegetables,” said Julie. She also connected with a USDA employee, Bob Baldwin, who volunteers his time and expertise on the project.

The energies of the McLean community, under the leadership of Julie, have provided an alternative to the packaged and shelf-stable foods that often come to food pantries. Her work is also answering First Lady Michelle Obama’s call to increase healthy food access for families around the country. The First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative emphasizes the important role community gardens play in increasing access to fresh produce.

They also began expanding the variety of vegetables that were available. According to Mendoza, “we now plant almost everything, including pumpkin, squash, tomatoes, peppers and beans.”

Julie believes it is important to “reintroduce children to healthy eating through connecting them with the earth.” To achieve this goal, Julie engaged local Girl Scouts in the process of gardening and the girls came up with the idea of writing a “Dear Mrs. Green Journal.” Here, the girls “write about working with produce and what they learned from the garden.” Boy Scouts also used the McLean Garden for an Eagle Scout project by building fences and gates in order to increase the amount of space that could be used for planting.

The spark of youth involvement led older residents to “donate” their gardens to Julie’s initiative. And other gardens, like the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church garden, are supporting the effort too. In the first year of the Gardeners’ Share of McLean, they collected nearly 250 pounds of freshly grown produce and this season, donations are nearing 800 pounds.

Julie exclaims “We have young, old, and everyone else engaged in this process and it is really changing lives!”

Letters to the President

Every day, people from all over the United States write to the White House — to describe what life is like in their communities, ask questions, and express both triumphs and frustrations. And every afternoon, the White House Correspondence Office packages ten of those letters for President Obama to read. It's part of how he keeps in touch with what's going on around the country.

Watch the story of how these ten letters reach the President.

Subject: 2. Ideen-Talk am 06.11.2012

Liebe Medical Valley-Partner,

November entgegen.

Herzliche Grüße
