Weekly Address: Congress Must Act to Create Jobs and Grow the Economy

President Obama describes how the House of Representatives left town without finishing important work that would create jobs and strengthen our economy.

Weekly Wrap Up

Here's a quick glimpse at what happened this week on WhiteHouse.gov:

Team USA Behind the Scenes: Last week, the President and the First Lady welcomed the 2012 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams to the White House to honor their participation and success in this year's Olympic and Paralympic Games in London. On Tuesday, we released a new video that lets you go behind the scenes and hear from the athletes as they describe their visit. Check it out here.

We also released a video of Paralympian Champion Lt. Brad Snyder sharing his story with First Lady Michelle Obama. "Overcoming adversity is a decision that everyone makes," Brad said, "And you can let that beat you or you can make the decision to move forward." Watch the video here.

Celebrating the 2011 WNBA Champions: On Tuesday, President Obama welcomed the Minnesota Lynx to the White House, congratulating them on their successful season and thanking them for continuing to set an important example for young women across the country:

"As the husband of a tall, good-looking woman and as the father of two tall, fabulous girls, it is just wonderful to have these young ladies as role models. There's something about women's athletics -- we know for a fact that when girls are involved in athletics, they do better across the board. They're more confident. They do better in school."

Aung San Suu Kyi at the White House: On Wednesday, President Obama met with Aung San Suu Kyi, Burmese Nobel Laureate and leader of the National League for Democracy Party. The President expressed his admiration for her courage, determination and personal sacrifice in championing democracy and human rights over the years. To learn more, see the full readout of the meeting.

Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” finally and formally being repealed, allowing gay and lesbian service members to serve openly in our nation's armed forces. In a statement marking the anniversary, President Obama said that repealing the law “upheld the fundamental American values of fairness and equality.”

President Obama signed repeal into law in December of 2010, and in July of 2011 the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certified that the Department of Defense had taken all the steps needed to prepare the military for repeal. Sixty days after that, at 12:01 a.m. on September 20, 2011, the era of Don't Ask, Don't Tell was over.

For more information:

National POW/MIA Recognition Day: Today marks the commemoration of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, where the nation honors those service members who endured captivity and whose remains have yet to be recovered. The day serves as a stark reminder of the risks and sacrifices that American service members and their families make every day. It is important that we acknowledge service members and their families. To see how you can support those who serve and our veterans, please visit joiningforces.gov.

You're Invited: This fall, the White House will once again open its gardens and grounds to visitors from across the country, continuing First Lady Michelle Obama's commitment to opening up the White House to as people as possible. To all of our social media followers, we invite you to join the White House Fall Garden Tour with a special tour of the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, and South Lawn, including the White House Kitchen Garden.

Kind of amazing.

You have to see this video.

Every White House has the privilege of hosting some world class athletes. Every President gets an opportunity to welcome Super Bowl champions, winners of the NBA Finals, and other professional and collegiate athletes at the top of their games.

But every once in a while, the White House hosts a group of champions who represent us all -- Team USA.

Last week, more than 400 Olympians and Paralympians gathered at the White House for an event to celebrate their success in this year's London Games.

We put together a video that takes you behind the scenes and lets you hear from the athletes as they describe their visit. Check it out here:

Watch the Video: Olympians and Paralympians visit the White House

We also sat down with one extraordinary athlete -- Lieutenant Brad Snyder -- as he met with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Lieutenant Snyder is a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Exactly one year after he was blinded by an improvised explosive device while on duty in Afghanistan, he won gold in the 400-meter freestyle in the London Paralympics, finishing nearly six seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

That video is pretty special, too.

Check them both out here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/team-usa

This fall, the White House will once again open its gardens and grounds to visitors from across the country continuing First Lady Michelle Obama's commitment to opening up the White House. As Mrs. Obama has said:

"This is really what the White House is all about. It’s the “People’s House.” It’s a place that is steeped in history, but it’s also a place where everyone should feel welcome. And that's why my husband and I have made it our mission to open up the house to as many people as we can."

Today, we're excited to announce the opportunity for our social media followers to join us for a special tour of the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, and the South Lawn, including the White House Kitchen Garden. We're calling this "White House Social" to bring in followers from a range of social networks (h/t NASA).

Interested in joining? Apply to attend the White House Social Fall Garden Tour today.

Be sure to follow @WhiteHouse on Twitter, “Like” us on Facebook, or follow us on Google+. Then, apply for your chance to attend at http://www.whitehouse.gov/social and let your friends know that you applied to join the #WHGarden Tour.

During these Fall Garden Tours, visitors can view the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, and South Lawn of the White House. Additionally, the White House Kitchen Garden – the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt’s Victory Garden – will be accessible to tour guests. These Garden Tours are free and open to the public; however, a ticket is required for all attendees (including small children). The National Park Service will distribute free, timed tickets at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion located at 15th and E Streets on each tour day beginning at 8:00 AM. Drew Brees on Helping America’s Kids Get Healthy
09/05/2012 04:21 PM EDT

Posted by:
Drew Brees, NFL Quarterback and Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition

Editor's Note: This blog was cross-posted from the President's Council for Fitness, Sports and Nutrition

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and it also marks the start of the new school year for kids across America. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition is ramping up its efforts to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and good nutrition, and they're challenging each of us to help America’s youth lead a healthier lifestyle.

My family means the world to me, and as a father I want my sons to grow up healthy and strong. The best way for me to show them how important it is to lead an active, healthy lifestyle is to model that behavior—not only during football season and in training camp but all year long.

Today in America, nearly one in three children is overweight and one in six is considered obese. These startling statistics highlight why childhood obesity is making a lot of headlines these days. First Lady Michelle Obama launched Let’s Move!to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation. To make this goal a reality, we all need to do our part. Let’s Move! offers some great recommendations for parents, schools, local officials, community leaders, chefs, kids, and health care providers.

Like all parents, I want my kids to avoid the health problems caused by childhood obesity. And there are many ways to be active and to get in your fruits and vegetables every day. It’s about making the healthy choice the easy choice, and ensuring that all kids have access to safe places to play, physical activity opportunities during school hours and out of school, and providing affordable, nutritious food options which the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was created to do.

Childhood obesity is one of the top health concerns for parents in the United States – tied with drug abuse and ahead of other issues like smoking and violence. I understand why…the statistics are alarming for unhealthy kids; being overweight or obese may not only have a serious effect on physical health, but it could also negatively impact school performance, increase health care costs, decrease workforce productivity and compromise our national security down the road.

Year round, the President’s Council promotes healthy lifestyles for all Americans – regardless of age, background or ability – and encourages everyone to jumpstart or maintain a healthy lifestyle by signing up for the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award: Activity + Nutrition (PALA+). Participation in PALA+ is one way to get your recommended amount of daily physical activity and meet your healthy eating goals – for you, your kids, and your family.

Ed. note: The physical activity facts for adolescent and school health were originally published on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Physical activity is essential to a healthy lifestyle, and it can be especially important in helping kids do better in school. U.S. Health and Human Services studies show that regular physical activity for kids and teens improves strength and endurance, helps build healthy bones and muscles, and increases self-esteem. Parents, teachers and community leaders can all play a supportive role, and help encourage a healthy lifestyle by promoting physical activity into everyday routines.

10 Tips for Smart Shopping: Fruits and Veggies
09/11/2012 02:31 PM EDT

Ed. note: Originally published in the USDA The School Day Just Got Healthier' Tooklkit for Parents.

It is possible to fit vegetables and fruits into any budget. Making nutritious choices does not have to hurt your wallet. Getting enough of these foods promotes health and can reduce your risk of certain diseases. There are many low-cost ways to meet your fruit and vegetable needs.

Fruits and Vegetables at Market

  1. Celebrate the season: Use fresh vegetables and fruits that are in season. They are easy to get, have more flavor, and are usually less expensive. Your local farmer’s market is a great source of seasonal produce.
  2. Why pay full price?: Check the local newspaper, online, and at the store for sales, coupons, and specials that will cut food costs. Often, you can get more for less by visiting larger grocery stores (discount grocers if available).
  3. Stick to your list: Plan out your meals ahead of time and make a grocery list. You will save money by buying only what you need. Don’t shop when you’re hungry. Shopping after eating will make it easier to pass on the tempting snack foods. You’ll have more of your food budget for vegetables and fruits.
  4. Try canned or frozen: Compare the price and the number of servings from fresh, canned, and frozen forms of the same veggie or fruit. Canned and frozen items may be less expensive than fresh. For canned items, choose fruit canned in 100% fruit juice and vegetables with “low sodium” or “no salt added” on the label.
  5. Buy small amounts frequently: Some fresh vegetables and fruits don’t last long. Buy small amounts more often to ensure you can eat the foods without throwing any away.
  6. Buy in bulk when items are on sale: For fresh vegetables or fruits you use often, a large size bag is the better buy. Canned or frozen fruits or vegetables can be bought in large quantities when they are on sale, since they last much longer.
  7. Store brands = savings: Opt for store brands when possible. You will get the same or similar product for a cheaper price. If your grocery store has a membership card, sign up for even more savings.
  8. Keep it simple: Buy vegetables and fruits in their simplest form. Pre-cut, pre-washed, ready-to-eat, and processed foods are convenient, but often cost much more than when purchased in their basic forms.
  9. Plant your own: Start a garden—in the yard or a pot on the deck—for fresh, inexpensive, flavorful additions to meals. Herbs, cucumbers, peppers, or tomatoes are good options for beginners. Browse through a local library or online for more information on starting a garden.
  10. Plan and cook smart: Prepare and freeze vegetable soups, stews, or other dishes in advance. This saves time and money. Add leftover vegetables to casseroles or blend them to make soup. Overripe fruit is great for smoothies or baking.

Marking the Eleventh Anniversary of 9/11

Today, President Obama and the First Lady marked the eleventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

They began the day at the White House, observing a moment of silence on the South Lawn just after 8:45 a.m., around the time the first plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. Afterward, they traveled to the Pentagon, where the President spoke at a memorial service in honor of those who died there, as well as in New York and Pennsylvania.

Vice President Biden marked the anniversary by traveling to Shanksville, PA, where he delivered remarks at the Flight 93 National Memorial Commemorative Service to honor the passengers and crew who died there 11 years ago today.
